I found this today while looking for something else on Google:
"Use the Local Business Center to create your free listing. When potential customers search Maps for local information, they'll find your business: your address, hours of operation, even coupons to print out and bring to your shop. It's easy, free, and you don't need a website of your own."
It takes a few minutes but they allow you to add a lot of information about your business. This could be quite helpful if you have a retail business and it can't hurt otherwise. I am not sure if it helps with search engine
optimization (SEO) but I am guessing that getting more information about your business indexed by Google will probably help.
As with most of these Google things, it is totally free. So sign up now and use it. If you are already using any of the other Google tools you should already have an account.
