We here at Juxtaflo Web Studio are huge movie fans. In fact, I (Gina) actually consider Netflix to be one my hobbies. For the betterment of our clients and the world in general, I wanted to pass along some great movie recommendations. Check back for updates!
Current Favorite Movies:
Blades of Glory (2007) - have you seen? Talk about a comedic dream team! The movie stars Will Ferrell, John Heder (of Napoleon Dynamite fame), Amy Poehler (SNL), and Will Arnett (Arrested Development star and Amy's husband in real life). It's now out on DVD so go get your laugh on!
Water (2006) is an outstanding Indian film about the plight of young Hindu brides who become widows at a shockingly young age. It is both charming and tragic, but not without hope. A warning: you will need a giant pile of Kleenex. Water has been nominated for an 2007 Oscar for best foreign film. It has my vote!
Little Miss Sunshine (2006) is what we pine for when we go to the movies. Usually, we leave disappointed, but not with this flick. It's funny, touching, and entertaining, from beginning to end. The all-star cast includes Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Greg Kinnear, and Alan Arkin (who rocks!). Released on DVD on December 19, 2006.
Borat (2006) is a must see! We don't want to say too much so as not to ruin the good parts, but you can plan on laughing until you cry. Sacha Baron Cohen takes it to a new level. A warning: not suitable for all audiences. I was somewhat traumatized by one scene (albeit hilarious!). If you've seen it, I know you know what I'm talking about!
Other Great Movies on DVD:
Ok, I'll give them to you fast. These are all must-see flicks:
- Amelie (2001): I am not a fan of romantic comedies, but this one is delightful. I recommend to all. Starring Audrey Tautou. Set in Paris. French with English subtitles.
- The Straight Story (1999): While it starts off a little slow, this one will tug at the hardest of hearts. Gives you hope in mankind.
- The Station Agent (2003): I thought it was going to be boring and/or odd, but I loved this movie! Had no idea going in that it would be as outstanding as it was. And what a cast! Peter Dinklage is incredible, Bobby Cannavale is hilarious, and the lovely Patricia Clarkson is amazing!
- In America (2002): Samatha Morton gives a stellar performance in this movie. One of my recent favorites.
Favorite TV on DVD:
- HBO's The Wire (gritty and fantastic - HBO always does it right!)
- HBO's Six Feet Under (you must see from beginning to end)
- HBO's Carnivale (fascinating story, outstanding actors, and drop dead gorgeous cinematography)
- HBO's Deadwood (not for the faint of heart)
- Lost (is anyone annoyed besides me that have to wait until Feb. 08?)
- 24 (But stop before Season 6 - sadly, the show jumped the shark)
- Arrested Development (could their be a better cast show?)
- The Office (British version please!)
Movies to Avoid on DVD:
- Da Vinci Code (book was fun, but this was a yawner)
- Aeon Flux (oh my, this one was so bad, it hurt!)
